Joanna Motion is Vice President for International Operations for CASE. CASE is the non-profit membership association that promotes training, advocacy, resources and networking for universities, colleges and schools in the fields of communications, marketing, development, alumni relations – or “institutional advancement”. From a base in London, Joanna’s is responsible for CASE activities in the 63 countries outside the USA where CASE has institutional members. She oversees the work of the CASE Asia-Pacific office in Singapore and the CASE Europe office in London – the fastest-growing membership areas for CASE – alongside programming in countries from Nigeria to Mexico.

Joanna has been an active advocate for change affecting educational philanthropy. She currently serves on the Advisory Group of the A$430m Matched Funding Scheme for Voluntary Giving for universities in England and in 2007 was a member of the European Commission’s Expert Panel on Philanthropy for Research in Universities. The key role that CASE’s practitioner-led training plays in the growth of advancement professionals was underscored by the recent award of a A$3.2m grant from the Higher Education Funding Council for England to deliver an enhanced programme of fundraising training in the UK.

Joanna’s 30-year career in education has taken her from the UK to Australia and back. Prior to joining CASE, she held positions in Communications, Alumni Relations and Development successively at the Universities of Hull, East Anglia, Melbourne and Kent. Joanna is a frequent presenter and speaker on advancement topics all over the world, with current and recent speaking commitments in Zhuhai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Strasbourg, Stockholm and Barcelona.

Joanna holds a Master of Arts from the University of Oxford, having graduated in English Language and Literature from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford.
